Calendula is part of a large group of annual and perennial herbaceous plants in the daisy family Asteraceae that are often known as marigolds.
The flowers can be used in salads and also as a natural dye to colour cheeses and as a substitute for saffron. It is commonly used in natural beauty products as soothing ingredient to salves and creams, including nappy creams.
Throughout time the plant has been used in folklore for rituals and ceremonies, weaved into crowns or garlands. The flowers are sacred flowers in India and have been used to decorate the statues of Hindu deities since early times.
